Graduate Assistantships/Doctoral Associateships
Graduate assistantships and doctoral associateships are awards given to students who are working toward a master’s or doctoral degree. The stipend associated with this award is for halftime duties (20 hours per week). Award holders may also be eligible to receive Graduate Summer Scholarships (without any work obligations).
Award holders receive a waiver of the instructional fee and out-of-state tuition surcharge (if applicable) for the period of the appointment. The waivers also apply for up to 16 credit hours in the preceding or succeeding summer terms of the appointment.
A limited number of awards are available to students through the Gerontology program. Award holders primarily serve as research assistants and are required to work an average of 18-20 hours per week in the Department of Sociology and Gerontology or Scripps Gerontology Center during the period of appointment (typically two academic semesters). Awards are competitive, and based on previous academic performance, reference letters, and the personal statement/ letter of intent required for application to the program.
If you plan to apply for an award, you must complete the “Application for Graduate Award” on the back of the Application for Admission to the Graduate School. Please remember that the deadline for receiving assistantship applications is February 1 and we must have ALL application materials to consider you for an award. In order for GRE scores to reach us by the deadline, you should take the exam as early as possible in the fall semester preceding the application deadline. We recommend that you begin the application process early to be certain all your materials reach us by February 1.
Additional information about assistantship awards is available in The Miami Bulletin, Graduate Edition. If you have additional questions, please contact the Director of Graduate Studies at (513) 529-2914 or at scripps@muohio.edu
